Stack’s Bowers Sold Rare $1000 Bill Notes at the Whitman Baltimore Expo

One of the highlights of the Whitman Baltimore Spring Expo this year was Stack’s Bowers Galleries official auction of the Joel. R. Anderson Collection Part I, in which two rare $1000 notes sold for almost $1 million each.

The first of two notes that tied at $960,000 was an 1863 $1,000 Legal Tender Note. The Friedberg 186d example was graded About New 58 by PCGS Currency.

According to the cataloger, “just four examples of the 1862 and 1863-dated $1,000 Legal Tender Notes are known to collectors, with only two in private hands, this being the finest graded.”
