Three Legends of Numismatics

You’ve heard about Three Tenors, the Three Musketeers, and perhaps even The Three Amigos, but Friday at the Whitman Spring Expo 2014 offered a chance to have an informal conversation with Three Legendary Numismatists.

Together, Harvey Stack, Larry Stack and Q.David Bowers have a staggering 180 years of top-level numismatic experience.

In a special joint appearance, moderated by Christine Karstedt, the three shared their personal collection of memories, ranging from the 1940s right up until the modern era of the coin and collectibles trade.

Harvey reminisced about the days when Stack’s at 123 West 57th Street in Manhattan was like an intimate clubhouse for some of the biggest names in collecting.

Larry talked about the 1970s, when the family business expanded into European markets.

And Q.David Bowers remembered sitting in the back row of auctions as one of the youngest dealers in the industry.

One thing the three legends agree on: coin collecting may be in flux, but it still has a bright future ahead of it.

Said Harvey: “We just need to get the romance back in the business.”
