Legendary numismatist Q. David Bowers recently shared his thoughts on the various forms of media, television, the internet, books, newspapers, and magazines, and their usefulness in the great hobby of coin collecting.

The Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo presented by Stack’s Bowers Galleries saw total sales that exceeded $11.1 million. Part III of the Joel R. Anderson Collection realized over $8.6 million, while the Caine Collection of Federal Proofs and Essays, Part I, brought over a million dollars.

Stack’s Bowers has made history, yet again, at the Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo, selling a rare 1890 “Grand Watermelon” Treasury Note for more than $2 million dollars.

Among the significant rarities offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries at the Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo is a Ryder-26 1788 Vermont copper, graded Fine-15 by PCGS, and described by Q. David Bowers as ““one of the well-known key rarities in the original Ryder listing.”

Stack’s Bowers Galleries will offer this phenomenal 1907-S Liberty Head $10 eagle at the Official Auction of the Whitman Baltimore Expo, well-known as a better date in the series in Choice Mint State or finer grade.

The Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo will feature two groundbreaking new exhibits and lectures on personal artifacts from the family of U.S. Mint chief engravers William Barber and Charles E. Barber.

Annapolis, Maryland silversmith John Chalmers produced silver threepence, sixpence, and shillings, the dies for which seem to have been engraved by Thomas Sparrow, who also engraved plates for Maryland paper currency.
